Is it a totally naive aspiration for the artist to want to change the world?
I created my very own government agency after 9/11, the US Department of Art & Technology, as an act of “collective agency” to engage the artist in times of crisis. Nine years later I brought the entire historical sweep of the project to the ZER01 Festival in San Jose to perform A Season in Hell. That completed my journey through the Underworld of America, before transitioning back to the so-called “real world” in order to embrace current conditions that felt sorely in need of artistic critique: our collective and global plunge into the post reality.
While the artist can never really change the world (nor anyone else for that matter), it is an aspiration that nevertheless provides the driving force for hope and change. Don’t ever forget that.
