Case in point: you do not need ears to hear music. There are other ways in which sound enters into and interacts with our bodies and our minds. It is possible to hear visually, particularly rhythm, which can be perceived and understood mathematically and conceptually. Tonight at the National Academy of Sciences I will demonstrate this. I will be conducting deaf actor and sign interpreter Robin Shannon in a performance of a musical reading of the Manifesto for the Post Reality. Last night at rehearsal Robin gave a stunning rendering of a highly stylized, rhythmical translation of the text, a musical performance in sign language that has perhaps never been seen before. If you are in Washington, DC tonight, you don’t want to miss this.
